Mexico has different zones. Some zones are free to travel, some you need a permit for. I have had issues in the past with not having one of the many ill defined vehicle permits. We tend to want to avoid unnecessary confrontation when possible so today we rode the SDMTS (trolley system) to San Ysidro to purchase our visitors permits for the rest of our journey. A pretty simple process, really. All you have to do is walk in to the Mexican Customs building looking like a typical pasty white Americans. Nailed that one! Then, explain what we needed. Very nice and helpful people, thank you!
We have taken the trouble of getting our Nexus cards (known as SENTRI on the southern border). That allowed for a very easy return to the US. As is the case with Northbound vehicles, pedestrians line up for miles while waiting to clear the US customs. With our NEXUS cards in hand, we were able to bypass the entire lineup and only wait for the two people in front of us crossing back. Minutes later, we were back on the trolley, headed back to the Gaslamp district in plenty of time for Super Bowl Sunday!
