February 20, 2015, its been two weeks on the road for us as of today. Excellent trip so far.
An easy travel day today. We left Santa Rosalia and took our time getting down to Loreto by exploring some of the small towns and beach communities along the way.
The road between the cities is dotted with white sandy beaches and every one of those sandy beaches is covered with motor homes parked next to Palapas filled with people spending the winter months enjoying the serenity of the bays. What a life!
Loreto is not necessarily what you would expect to see for a small-medium sized Baja town. Quite modern in appearance, clean and quiet. It seems to be filled with ex-pats and tourists.
Loreto had the first mission in all of the California's and was originally the Capitol of Baja Sur until a hurricane forced its relocation to La Paz in the 1800's.

A cruise ship was anchored just off shore this morning. That explains a great deal about the upscale tourists area in Loreto.
In spite of the increased tourist traffic, we had a nice day walking around the town in both the tourist and traditional areas of town.
There are cave paintings up in the hills above Loreto that we had planned on seeing. After all, we now have some experience on the less well maintained roads. After learning that they are a two day hike beyond the end of the road however, we decided pictures will suffice. We have also heard that the hurricane wiped out the cave paintings…who knows? We will go to San Javier tomorrow and see what we can find out.
Dinner tonight happened to be a special event at our hotel, the "Hotel Oasis".
It was a special clam bake featuring clams prepared 3 different ways. Raw, Calms Au Gratin (roasted with garlic (ajo), butter and cheese (queso)) and the Mexican traditional way where the clams are buried in the sand and a fire is built on top with small sticks indigenous to the areas around the beach. After the fire has completely burned down (about 40 minutes), the clams are ready. All 3 styles produce different tastes and its darned hard to pick a favorite. Another excellent dinner!
