After a very nice evening in Eureka, we settled in for the night. The window in the bathroom could be opened so I thought we would take advantage of that for ventilation rather than having to listen to the periodic outbursts of the AC unit. All was well until about 1:40 in the morning. I awoke to howling wind slapping the flagpole rope repeatedly against the pole, in addition to an alarm on a nearby building that no one seemed to be concerned about. I must have listened to the alarm for over an hour when a bathroom break led me to determine that by far, the best source of the noise was through that bathroom window. So much for ventilation.
Other than perhaps a little stuffy, the rest of the night went without incident.
Our drive today wasn't particularly long as we only planned on making it to San Jose today. Just a few hours traveling to we took out time and relaxed for a bit at breakfast (hotel provided). We didn't hit the road until 10:00AM.
Still a little wind around that blew in periodic showers of varying degrees of intensity. The trip through the undulating highway carved around the giant redwoods proved slow and the opportunity to enjoy the scenery was hampered by the necessity to survive.
Exiting the mountainous regions, for the first time in a few days we were back to driving on a freeway. It wasn't long, however, until we were in the middle of a traffic jam as far as the eye could see (some people call it a commute). It was 2:something and we didn't reach San Jose until 5:00. Unfortunately much less scenery to enjoy.
I stumbled upon a neat area of San Jose a few of years ago. I was anxious to show it to Janet. It has changed a bunch since I was last there. Some of the formerly flourishing pubs, restaurants and bars have close. Some nice offerings do, however, still exist.
The char-broiled air surrounding "Billy Berks", unquestionably drew us in to find a top notch dinner. Fried chicken and a burger, cooked to perfection and we're good 'till morning.
