Carnaval begins in San Felipe today and could conceivably last until Tuesday night. It will last at least for the weekend.
The Malecon has been taken over by a large stage and vendors tents and all sorts of activities. Music and dancing plus one of the strangest opening ceremonies we've ever seen.
Shortly after crowning the queen of Carnaval, they set off fireworks strapped to an effigy of the mayor of San Felipe and finally completely blew it up!
After a little research I have learned that it is tradition to burn the latest unpopular politician. It's call "El Mal Humor" (the ill humor).
Shortly there after dance teams made up of young girls from late elementary to middle school age demonstrated their far too suggestive dance moves.
Finally the live music started and things soon seemed like a normal street party.
Many announcements took place as all of this unfurled but being, to us, in a foreign language, we didn't take away much from it.
Tomorrow, I'm sure we'll see more.
